Job Description:

Medical Officer (General Practice) - GS-602-11/15. Medical Officers provide direct service to inmates in Federal prisons involving the performance of diagnostic, preventive, or therapeutic services. We have a continuous need for Medical Officers around the country.

Qualifications: Basic qualification requirements for all Medical Officer GS-11 positions: Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or a Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of graduation, or permanent certification by the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates or a fifth pathway certificate; and a one-year post M.D. or D.O. supervised internship or the first year of a residency training in an accredited institution; and possession of a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a state, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. If not currently licensed, you must obtain a license before entering duty; you may be selected for appointment pending meeting the licensure requirement; however, you must obtain a license before entering on duty. GS-12 and above: In addition to meeting the qualification requirements at the GS-11 grade level, one year of experience and/or training comparable in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade in Federal service is required. For specialty positions, additional experience and training must have been in the appropriate specialty area. The training and/or experience must have been progressive and responsible, and must have demonstrated that the applicant has a good knowledge of current principles, practices, methods, and techniques in his/her field of medicine.

Medical Officer GS-602-15 for the following specialties only: Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, Psychiatry, Radiology, Surgery, Neurology, Family Practice, Rehabilitation Medicine and Anesthesiology. Medical Officers provide direct services to inmates in Federal prisons involving the performance of diagnostic, preventive, or therapeutic services.

Qualifications: GS-15: In addition to meeting the basic qualification requirements for GS-11 as described above, specialist positions require graduate training and experience related to the specialty and sub-specialty of the position to be filled. Experience may not be substituted for training essential for performing specialized duties. The length and content of residency programs depend upon the specialization and requirements of recognized accredited American medical specialty boards; therefore, specialists must have completed the number of years of accredited residency training required by the board in their respective specialties. GS-15: five years of residency training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training. Qualifications are in accordance with OPM regulations.
