We currently have the following position available in our Neuromodulation Division.

The Director of Applied Research & Technology Development (ARTD) is responsible for effectively directing applied research and technology development projects covering the range of St. Jude Medical’s Neuromodulation Division (NMD) opportunities. Provide technical leadership, strategic product guidance, project definition, and overall management of ARTD group resources consistent with NMD and SJM corporate needs.

Major, On-Going Responsibilities:
•Responsible for hiring and retaining a diverse, highly qualified staff and for providing career coaching, growth and personal development. Sets standards of technical competency and skill development. Creates an environment that consistently fosters employee understanding of quality and motivates all employees to actively participate in the process of continuous improvement. Accountable for the performance of subordinates as well as the work output of managed subcontractors. Models optimum leadership competencies to inspire an energized, empowered and accountable work force and maintains a strong customer focus. Actualizes the Neuromodulation Division’s credo and core values.
•Responsible for working with the project leaders and team members to develop accurate project schedules and plans. Acts as mentor to direct staff to develop solutions and resolve complex problems that could significantly impact organization commitments. Anticipates and resolves the highest level of problems that could impact the operational success of assigned functions.
•Recommends, interprets and implements policies and procedures to accomplish assignments and resolves a broad range of issues; ensures employee compliance with policies and procedures.
•Provides senior management with strategic information, operating plans, and budget requirements, relating to current applied research and technology development. Works towards the identification of future market-differentiating product opportunities.
•Maintains interdepartmental communications to ensure that ARTD project activities and goals are effectively communicated and representative of corporate goals. Manages conflicting objectives. Provides ARTD support and resources as necessary to identify and resolve problems related to the introduction and transition of a new product through its life cycle.
•Remains current on developments in field(s) of responsibility, regulatory requirements, as well as industry trends. Maintains knowledge of current and novel technology through literature, trade journals, university associations, and by attending scientific conferences. Actively pursues development of corporate intellectual property.

Education and Training:

Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical/Electrical Engineering or equivalent. Graduate degree desired.
•15 plus years experience in applied research, technology development or product development including 5 plus years experience in medical device R&D.
•5 plus years of demonstrated experience at a managerial level.
•Strong experience in engineering and product development with demonstrated design capability and thorough understanding of the FDA regulated product development process.
•Demonstrated ability to understand and comply with applicable FDA regulations and Company operating procedures, processes, policies, and tasks
•Demonstrated proficiency and expertise in micro-electronics
•Experience with test documentation, protocol and report writing
•Experience developing project timelines
•Ability to prioritize responsibilities and ensure deadlines are met
•Strong technical and analytical/problem solving skills
•Must be skilled at delegation, follow-up, and team building.
•Proficient working knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel and Project
•Experience in AIMD development desired

Other Skills/Characteristics:
Individual must be highly motivated and resourceful. Individual must possess excellent interpersonal skills and have demonstrated ability to motivate technical personnel. Individual must be comfortable in clinical surroundings and be able to communicate effectively with Physicians and Field personnel. Exemplary analytical, organizational, written and oral communication skills are a must.
