Job Responsibilities:
Responsible for applying state and local income tax technical knowledge to complex client scenarios. Such knowledge may include nexus issues, filing requirements, legal structure, tax planning, and compliance issues. Advanced technical skills in a variety of tax and accounting areas, along with well-developed and applied management and supervisory skills are required. The Tax Manager makes decisions on all but the most unusual tax situations.
Job Qualifications:
Demonstrate competency in technical skills, work quality, and application of professional standards and firm policies. Supervise and/or coordinate phases of engagements including planning engagements, set budgets for time and expenses and monitor actual performance against budget. Direct and instruct staff, where applicable, in work to be performed and work paper preparation. Perform complex state tax research on a regular basis, and review research material prepared by staff. Perform technical review and approval of some state income tax returns. Perform technical review and client support in state governmental tax examinations of varying complexity. Participate actively in client meetings and state tax planning efforts. Act as a resource for tax preparers and A&A staff on specific state tax issues and/or questions. Proactively address state tax issues and conduct tax planning Respond to state tax notices of any sort and draft letter of response for Partner review and signature. Assist in preparation of tax accruals as may be required in preparing corporate tax returns. Work with confidential client matters; requires ability to keep matters confidential. Work to develop responsible, trained staff by assisting in recruiting, performance evaluations, developing training aids, and acting as an instructor in professional development programs. Participate in firm’s practice development efforts including expanding services to clients.
Additional Information:
Draft proposals for new business. Prepare other reports and projects as requested from time to time by the partners. Assist with monthly client billings as requested by Partner. Participate in Career Development sessions with Staff. Assist in the growth and development of the state and local tax practice which may include accompanying partner(s) and/or business development personnel to initial client meetings. Develop professional relationships with clients, prospective clients and outside professionals. Perform other duties as may be assigned.
Required Education, Experience and Skills::
Bachelors or Masters Degree in Accounting or comparable (6 years) public accounting experience. A current and valid Certified Public Accountants license is required. Must be in good standing with the State Board(s) of Accountancy and AICPA. In addition to the qualifications above, seven years of public accounting experience demonstrating a progression in complexity, scope, and number of engagements managed (or comparable industry experience in business tax area). Extensive knowledge of state tax research software applications, state websites (or comparable research tools). Proficiency in use of computers and computer accounting and tax software programs including but not limited CCH ProFx Tax software (or comparable tax preparation software) and Microsoft Office. Strong knowledge of Multi-state income tax code, rules, and regulations, various tax forms and their interrelationships, return filing requirements and due dates. Ability to recognize various state tax issues and conduct appropriate research. Ability to communicate clear, correct and concise English in verbal and written form. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with clients, taxing authorities, partners and peers.
